Renegades Douse the Sizzle

The Alabama Renegades doused the Cincinnati Sizzle in their season home opener 46-14 at Alabama A&M Stadium Saturday night.

Cincinnati scored first with a well-executed pass play, but the Renegades answered with two touchdowns in the first quarter. Again in the second quarter, the Sizzle was able to punch the ball in the end zone for a touchdown and again the Renegades answered with two more touchdowns. The score was 28-14 at the half. The Renegade defense stepped up, applying constant pressure on the Sizzle quarterback in the the second half and effectively shut down the Cincinnati offense. Alabama was able to put up 18 points in the second half with a rumbling Renegade rushing game.

The Renegade defense was led in tackling by linebacker Link Green. She had three solo tackles and one assist. Sherry Pruett accumulated one solo and three assists on special teams. Defensive lineman Dana Sanders had one solo tackle, one assist, and the first Renegade sack of the year hitting the Sizzle quarterback for a two yard loss. Newcomer Stephanie Palmer had an excellent first game of her career with one assisted tackle, two defended passes, and her first career interception.

Running back Dionne Eatman had a break-out night rushing for 125 yards in 11 carries and scored one touchdown. Running back Marty Alber carried the ball 12 times for 78 yards and three touchdowns. Fullback Jessica Smith racked up 74 yards in 14 rushes and quarterback Nancy Byrd rumbled for 69 yards with 10 carries and two touchdowns. Byrd completed 12 for 19 passing for 125 yards and one touchdown. She connected with Alber for the score. Tight end Sandra Kerby and Alber were the top receivers. Kerby had 5 catches for 46 yards and Alber had 4 catches for 43 yards.

Alabama has a bye this week and then they travel to Louisville to face the Kentucky Karma on May 17.

The Alabama Renegades are part of the National Women's Football Association (NWFA). There will be eight games played in the 2008 regular season. The team will travel to Cincinnati, OH, Louisville, KY, Chattanooga, TN, and Pensacola, FL. The NWFA is the largest league in the world for women's full contact football.
